Now that the door knob assembly is removed you can take a good look at the internal components.

Knowing act refers to the idea that pedestrians activate the door with the intent of opening the door.
Go to the side of the door that has the turning or push button actuator this is the interior side secure side of the handle.
These knowing act devices are typically wireless handicap push buttons.
The spindle should project through the inside of the door a maximum of 1 2 and min of 1 4.
Inspect the shank of the doorknob for a small hole or indentation.
Place the deadbolt on the inside of the door and fasten it to the exterior key lock with two tapping screws.
Push on the latch to move the internal components.
You will see how the door knob lock works and can then use the rag to wipe down the internal components.
If you were changing the combination and the lock stops locking you likely set it to a zero combination.
If your handle does not have an actuator chances are the rose or handle is the faster refer to the exposed fastener door handle section above.
Loosen the screws holding the push button doorknob to the door with a screwdriver and pull off the front and rear.
If that does not resolve the problem you will need to call a technician.
Place the strike for the deadbolt against the jamb and fasten with two tapping screws.
If there is a thumb turn on the lock on the inside of the door turn it.
Use a pen to test the turning mechanism.

The knob should come right.
If the lock starts operating properly you know it was in passage mode.
