How to dismantle door lock.
Place the parts removed from the door and the door jamb onto a cloth rag.
At this point the square tab on the spindle is aligned with the square.
Locate unscrew the set screw.
Removing a mortise lock requires no more tools than for removing a regular knob door lock.
Pull the thumbturn unit away from the inside of the door followed by the outside cylinder unit from the outside of the door.
Use the flat head screwdriver to turn the spindle in the center of the door lock cylinder counterclockwise until it stops.
Many door knobs have trim plates that cover the screws so removing them can be a bit tricky if you ve never done it before.
Typically you ll have to turn the screws counter clockwise to loosen them.
Once your latch plate is off and your casing bolts are removed pull the 2 halves of the lock straight out on each side of the door.
Unscrew the deadbolt mounting screws from the inside of the deadbolt with a phillips screwdriver.
This screw will be on the shank of the inside knob the one you use to lock the door.
You ll see the frame of the lock that holds the latch or dead bolt plug remaining in the hole.
You don t need to remove that unless you are changing out your entire door lock.
Unscrew the door handles.
Thy may be pretty grimy from their years of use.
Remove the screws on both sides of the lock.
A hammer may be needed if your lock is stuck step 1.
Use a screwdriver to unscrew the exposed screws at the base of the knob.
